Tuberculosis (TB)

FL Dept. of Health<br/>in St. Lucie County

Our mission is to find, treat, and prevent the spread of Tuberculosis.

We service anyone that is a resident of St. Lucie County who:

  • may have been exposed to an active case of TB
  • who has a first time positive PPD (TB skin test), or
  • who may be having symptoms of TB. Symptoms may include:
    • cough lasting longer than 3 weeks
    • coughing up blood
    • unexplained fever
    • unexplained weight loss
    • night sweats

Active cases of TB are usually treated with four drugs anywhere between four months to one year. The medicine is given via Directly Observed Therapy (we must ensure that medicine is taken due to the public health threat).

We also treat for Latent TB infection. This is when a patient has a positive PPD, but has a normal X-Ray. The medicine is given for 9 months to decrease the chance the infection will turn into the disease. We carry a completion rate of approximately 50-150 clients per year on LTBI therapy. We offer PPDs, chest x-rays, lab draws, and assessments as needed.
