HIV/AIDS Surveillance Statistics

FL Dept. of Health in St. Lucie County

The St. Lucie County Health Department is the headquarters for the Area 15 HIV/AIDS Surveillance Program. The four counties that encompass Area 15 are Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee and St. Lucie Counties.

Since 1983, for the purposes of disease surveillance, statistical information obtained from those individuals diagnosed with AIDS has been reportable to the State Health Office. This AIDS surveillance data includes the demographic information and behavioral traits linked to HIV infection for those individuals diagnosed with AIDS. The collection and compilation of this surveillance data allows for an extensive, in-depth analysis of key trends in the race/ethnicity, gender, age and mode of transmission of those individuals diagnosed with AIDS.

Since July of 1997, positive test results from confidential HIV antibody testing have been reportable to the State Health Office. This HIV surveillance data provides a more accurate glimpse into the current demographic composition and behavioral characteristics that constitute the framework of the local epidemiological profile for HIV infection in the State of Florida.

For more information on the HIV/AIDS epidemiological profile for Area 15, please contact: Patricia Weiner at (772) 462-3875.
