Since 2013 the Florida Department of Health in St. Lucie has partnered with a local foundation to host an annual free heart screening to prevent youth from sudden cardiac arrest and preventable sudden cardiac death. The comprehensive heart screening includes an EKG, exam by a physician, and an echocardiogram if indicated by pediatric cardiologists all in one location and on the same day. The event is Saturday, November 4, from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm for kids aged 5-20 years old.

The foundation was started when Cheryl and Ray Lalloo lost their daughter Jessica in 2003 to an undiagnosed heart condition known as mitral valve prolapse. Jessica was a student at St. Lucie West Centennial High School. She was Student Council President, captain of the varsity cheering squad and an honor roll student. She passed away suddenly after cheerleading practice one afternoon due to her heart condition that was never discovered in any previous medical examinations. To honor the memory of their daughter, Cheryl and Ray began the Jessica Clinton MVP Foundation. The Foundation works tirelessly to enact legislation to mandate defibrillators in all schools and partnering with the health department to conduct the annual screening.
